Social Adaptation Mechanisms Under Siege
A Sociological-Field Study of a sample of households in the Gaza Strip
Problem of the study:
Families in the Gaza Strip are suffering from a crippling blockade that affects family life, rights and functions, construction, and rob it from its basic human needs of water, food and medicine. This situation is in violation of all international conventions and agreements on international human rights. Due to the complexity of the political social and economic conditions in the strip, the suffering of the families are still rising, and the living conditions they are exposed to, threaten their survival while the Israeli siege is still continuing on the Gaza Strip.
The problems facing the families as poverty, unemployment and internal political problems are multiplying. Hence, there is a pressing need to get to know the reality of the lives of families in such social, political, psychological and cultural circumstances. We need to identify the impact of these combined conditions on family life, structure, gender roles, functions and needs.
There is a great need as well to know the reality of the Palestinian family after the blockade, and its resulting utility, social and economic problems and crises in the life and daily living of the families. The blockade imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip has a great impact on families including its members and all aspects of life.
Objectives of the study:
1 – Identifying the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip.
2 – To understand the social adjustment in the Gaza Strip.
3 - To identify the problems and difficulties faced by families in the Gaza Strip under siege.
4 - Identifying the mechanisms of social adjustment utilized by families under siege in Gaza.
5 - Identifying obstacles facing social adjustment by families under siege in Gaza.
6 - to identify the general features of social, economic and cultural adaptation by families in the Gaza Strip and the levels of this adaptation.
Questions of the study:
1 - What is meant by the blockade?
2 - What is meant by social adaptation?
3 - What are the problems and difficulties facing families in the Gaza Strip because of the blockade?
4 - What are the mechanisms of social adjustment utilized by families under siege in the Gaza Strip?
5 - What are the obstacles to social adjustment for families under siege in Gaza?
6 - What is the general features of social, economic and cultural adaptation in the Gaza Strip?
7 - What are the levels of social adaptation in the Gaza Strip?
Methodology:
This study is of the descriptive analytical type, where the researcher will collect data from the study community, using quantitative and qualitative analysis to study the phenomenon and to estimate the various factors influencing it.
Data collection tools:
The researcher utilized observation by participation and individual as well as group interviews to collect data from the study community.
Results:
The study revealed the problems of families under siege in the housing, power, water supply and domestic fuel. The study also explained mechanisms utilized by families to adapt with these problems. The study also revealed problems of transportation under siege as well as problems in food, medicine and mechanisms utilized by families with different standards of living to deal with these problems. The study revealed economical problems as unemployment and lowered income. The study explained maneuvers and reactions undergone to face this problems.
The study also revealed the social problems of families in marriage, clothing and social relations, entertainment and showed ways families deal with these problems. It also revealed the educational problems of families as well as the ways and methods of families in resisting of these problems.
The study also shows the main features of social adjustment under siege , and the most important impediments to adjustment in the study community. One of the most important findings of the study that the extended family is the social adjustment mechanism by the elementary family , where the poor elementary family relies on the extended family in the provision of food or finding jobs. The study showed that women have an important role in the facing the siege and overcoming its problems. The study also showed that the mutual understanding between the spouses is an important factor for social adjustment and that the change of roles of the husband at home helped the family stability and adjustment.
The study revealed that the most educated families are best able to adapt to the siege and face its problems. The study showed that the blockade had a negative impact on student achievement, especially as some of the students go to school or university on foot, fatigued without an allowance to eat at school and without suitable clothing like rich or middle class students.
The study revealed that power blackout was affecting the timing and frequency of social visiting especially for those living in high rise building. Study showed that some of the social relations and social visits were an excuse to offer assistance from some rich or middle class families to their poor or unemployed relatives. Finally, the study showed that the problems of family life are linked to the economic situation where the lower the economic standard, the higher the negative siege effects on the family
