Abstract

The aim of this work is to study relation between migraine and ischemic stroke in young women. Fifty women with acute ischemic cerebrovascular stroke have been recruited from Neuropsychiatric department of El Hadara University Hospital and fifty women were matched for age and sex. All patient and control groups were subjected to complete history taking and a highly structured questionnaire that covered all of the International Headache Society’s diagnostic criteria for migraine with or without aura and different subtypes, Complete general and neurological examination.Neurological deficit was quantified according to National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Routine labwork,hematological investigations,echocardiography, chest X-ray and neuroimaging whether CT or MRI.
The results of this study showed:
There was no statistically significant difference between the patient and the control group in residency but a statistical significant difference was found regarding occupation and marital statusbeing more in housewives and married females.
There was a statistical significant difference between the patient and the control group in migraineur patients with aura also a statistical significant difference was found regarding frequency and duration of migraine.
There was no statistical significant difference regarding onset of migrainebetween patients and controls.
There were no statistical significant differences between migrainous and non migrainous groups regarding radiological findings (the side,site and size of the lesion). Also no statistical significant differences was found regarding the affected artery ,odema and hemorrhagic transformation.
There were no statistically significant differences between the cases and control groups regarding chest X-ray finding,ECG finding or transthoracic echocardiographic finding.
There was no statistical significant differences between migraineur and non migraineur stroke patients regarding NIHSS scale at admission or discharge.
There was no statistical significant difference between the patient and control group according to drugs used for prophylaxis and treatment of migraine.
There was no statistically significant differences regarding laboratory investigations between patient and control group.
