Abstract

In this dissertation, the seismic responses of asymmetric structures were investigated under number of real earthquake ground motions. The analysis was conducted on four structural models that were used to study the response of asymmetric structures. All four models have the same lateral stiffness but have different torsional stiffness. Two models represent structures that are torsionally flexible (TF), while the others represent structures torsionally stiff (TS). For each configuration, three values of eccentricity (e/b) were considered, namely: 5%, 10% and 15%. The consequences of asymmetry on the different response parameters such as displacements, story drifts, and floor rotation were discussed. The significance of torsional stiffness on the behavior of asymmetric buildings was studied and explained. Code provisions for torsion design were studied. Evaluation of the effectiveness of torsional provisions was investigated to improve the seismic performance of asymmetric multi story buildings. First, verification of the distribution of the strength based on the Uniform Building Code (UBC) was executed. Then the static torsional provisions based on a simple static equilibrium were studied. Finally, a modification for the static equilibrium consideration analysis to proportion the design strength of the elements was suggested.
