Abstract

Background: The feeling of stigma among those who have mentally ill patients plays an important role in creating a hard life, full of anxiety, depression, shame and stresses. This feeling may lead to isolation, fear and tension which prohibit the care givers to seek the treatment for their sons and they do not complain to avoid embarrassment. The interest in studying the roots of stigma and its causes will help in understanding it well and will enlighten the way for creating the most suitable solutions and counseling programs for it. Aim: The aim of this study is to explore the influence of patient and family caregivers’ stigma on the patient self-esteem and treatment compliance. Method: This is descriptive cross sectional study carried on both mentally ill patients and their family caregiver 215patient and 215 family caregivers in the in-patient Psychiatric Department of Mansoura University Hospital. Results: The age of the study sample ranged from 18-60 year with a mean±SD of 34.80±12.22.More than half of the sample (51.7%) is between 30-50 years. The prevalence of low self-esteem represents (50.7%). compared to high self-esteem that represents (49.3%).The totally non-compliant patients represent (54.9%) compared to totally compliant patients that represent (45.1%).The totally stigmatized patients represent (59.5%) compared to totally non-stigmatized patients that represent (16.7%). Conclusion: It can concluded from the present study that having a mental illness patient at any family is considered a crisis that any one of us may encounter, that is because no one is safe from this illness. Exploring mental illness stigma is important for both patient and their family caregivers because the feeling of stigma may let patients avoid psychiatric services and treatments So it is recommended to increase public awareness about the harmful consequences of mental illness stigma through mass media, taking into consideration the predisposing factors identified in the present study and how to attach patient with their treatment plan and raising his self-esteem
