Abstract

Aggregate is a major component of asphalt mixes, so their properties play a significant role on the asphalt paving mixtures. Coarse aggregate structure is most important for resistance to rutting, and it can also play a significant role in resistance to damage and fracture. Therefore, large enough aggregates should engage dominantly in the structure for good mixture performance.
This study aims at investigate the effect of maximum aggregate size as well as aggregate gradation and characteristics of asphalt concrete mixtures.
To achieve this objective; different aggregate gradations having different maximum aggregate size (MAS) (1,3/4, ½ and 3/8 inch) were formed by using fuller and Thompson,s maximum density equation (interactive equation).
These gradations were used to design and prepare the investigated asphalt mixes. Optimum asphalt content (OAC),s and the other mix characteristics at OAC of the investigated mixes were determined through performing marshall design tests.
