Abstract

Pseudofolliculitis barbae is an extremely common
condition that occurs to some degree in most men who
shave, but has attracted little attention in the
medical literature (Phillips and McDonald, 1986). A
search in the literature revealed an astonishing
shortage of refe~ences to this condition. The excellent
papers of Morison (1888); Fox (1908) and Hazen (1914)
on dermatoses in black patients contain no indication
that the peculiar picture caught the attention of these
keen observers
The first case of pseudofolliculitis barbae was
reported by Dubreuilh (1922). The condition has been
described under different names. Among the terms used
are folliculitis barbae traumatica (Greenbaum, 1935);
chronic scarring pseudofolliculitis of the negro beard
(Pinkus, 1943) but in common dermatological parlance it
is probably referred to as chronic sycosis barbae, a
designation which is both inaccurate and misleading.
Pseudofolliculitis barbae seems an apt name (Strauss
and Kligman, 1956).
