Abstract The problem of salinity assumes special importance in Egypt both for tile old cultivated areas as well as for the newly reclaimed land. The soils being under hot and arid climate have actual or potential salinity. In the cultivated area of Egypt salinity was not a problem under the basin irrigation system. However, with the application of the perennial irrigation system without drainage, secondary salinization started to affect wide areas of these soils. At present, it is assumed that about 2 million acres are salt affected soils by different degrees. Most of these areas are located in the northern part of the Delta and in El-Fayo~ depression in addition to many saline areas scattered witbin the cultivated land. In aost cases shallow saline ground water plays an iaportent role in the secondary salinization process.
