Abstract

FEM-β is a finite element method with particle discretization for failure analysis. Recent versions have been applied to model the failure of steel structural members and granular materials. In this dissertation, experimental study is conducted to explore the failure of steel structures and to use its outcome to present the modified FEM-β (MFEM-β) for failure analysis of steel structures. MFEM-β has three main improvements. First, superior hardening code is employed to track the stress-strain curve of any steel type. Second, new powerful random imperfection modeling procedure is proposed and coded to MFEM-β. The procedure has six input parameters to simulate the real material and seven stages to apply the imperfection to the model. Third, many failure enhancements are introduced. Combined stress-strain failure criterion is proposed besides four techniques to update the stress in the cracked domains and other enhancements. The results showed that MFEM-β is efficient enough to replace FEM-β.
