Abstract The aim of this study is to evaluate the functional arm brace as conservative method for treatment of humeral shaft fracture. This study includes 23 patients suffered from recent closed shaft fracture of humerus and were treated by functional arm brace in the period between August 2011 to August 2012. There were 9 males and 14 females, the age of patients were from 22 years to 75 years with average (45 years), 10 patients were classified according to AO classification as a simple spiral fracture (12-A1), 1 patient as a simple oblique fracture (12-A2), 4 patients as a simple transverse fractures (12-A3), 5 patients as a wedge spiral fractures (12-B1), 1 patient as a wedge bending fracture (12-B2), 2 patients as a complex irregular fractures(12-C3). Eleven patients had a past history of chronic disease and 12 patients with no such history. The patient’s functional final results were evaluated according to simple shoulder test and Mayo elbow performance score, and their results were the same for both scores and it were 13 patients as excellent (60%), 7 patients as good (28%), 1 patient as fair (4%) and two patients as poor (8%). The result was satisfactory for 20 patients (88%) and unsatisfactory for 3 patients (12%), the excellent and good results were considered satisfactory while the fair and poor results were considered unsatisfactory. |
