Abstract This study examined the possible use of wastewater from different sources for irrigation purposes. Study of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of these types of water, was carried out using Vicia faba L. as a test plant. Plants were treated with different types of water (Distilled water as a negative control, aqueous hydrogen peroxide as a positive control mutagen, tap water, agricultural drainage water and mixed water). Most of growth parameters were significance affected by pollution which is clearly reduce most of parameters studied as germination index, root length, seedling vigor index, tolerance index and plant height. On the other hand, induction of morphological abnormalities in root was observed. Polluted water treatments were also affected mitotic and meiotic parameters. Such effect was clearly observed in decrease the frequency of mitotic index, phase frequency and increase in the percentage of chromosomal aberrations in mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of V. faba. Molecular analysis for the offspring seeds of V. faba for protein, isozymes and RAPD profiles showed that polluted water had genotoxic effect on Vicia faba plants. |
