Abstract

This thesis focuses on meta-material antenna and filter design and analysis. Studies have been undertaken covering the aspects of left handed antennas and filters fundamentals. First, dual and multi-band composite right left handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) antennas for wireless applications are designed and investigated. The left handed metamaterial unit cell consists of interdigital capacitor and short circuit stub acting as an inductor. The antenna is operated at multi-frequency bands because of increasing the number of cells used in antenna design. The multi-band antenna has compact size .The size reduction is achieved due to the nonlinearity behavior of the left-handed region of CRLH (TL). Another dual-band left-handed antenna is designed, where its bands are used in wireless applications.
Second, different types of two elements left handed transmission line Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) antenna with simple, compact size and very high isolation are designed and investigated. The compactness is achieved by utilizing the novel properties of left handed structures. The high isolation between the two antenna elements is achieved with very close antenna element spacing and without using extra bandstop filtering structures. The high isolation depends on current reversal between antenna elements. For each MIMO antenna, the theoretical concepts of the designed MIMO antenna are introduced. Third, two elements MIMO antennas with compact size and very low coupling isolation are designed. The first antenna design was CRLH MIMO antenna loaded with defected ground structure (DGS). The second one was two elements microstrip patch MIMO antenna with and without DGS .The patch MIMO antenna is designed to achieve the comparison with the CRLH MIMO antenna to validate the high isolation and compactness between two designed antennas. Finally, different orders coupled resonators band pass filters are designed and investigated. Second order band pass filter which based on split ring resonators is designed and investigated. In addition, a third order band pass filter with high selectivity by producing single transmission zero is designed. Also, a second order band pass filter with two transmission zeros to increase the performance and selectivity of the filter is designed. The band pass filters have the advantage of compactness .A design of the band pass filters is depended on the coupling matrix and external quality factor extraction. The commercial software CST microwave studio was employed in the full wave simulations. For all designs the simulated results are confirmed by experimental measurements.
