Abstract

Under nutrition is a major disabler preventing children who survive to reach their full developmental potential resulting in stunting, lower cognitive outcomes in children, learning deficits, subsequently, school drop-out, developmental delays, infectious secondary immune deficiency and infant and child death as under nutrition was associated with 54% of child deaths (10.8 million children) in developing countries in 2001 and It was responsible, directly or indirectly, for one third of the estimated 9.5 million deaths that occurred in 2006 in children less than 5 years of age. br There were researches -#102;-#114;-#111;-#109; industrialized countries argued that the children most at risk of developmental deficits were those of mothers exhibiting depressed mood throughout their early childhood years but few studies have examined this relationship in developing countries. br Justification of the study: br Under nutrition is one of the world’s highest priority health issues and of public health importance. First two years of life provide window of opportunity to ensure proper child nutritional status, identifying some factors that may affect nutritional status of infancy, early childhood may help in prevention of under nutrition. Although, Women in developing countries have high rates of common mental disorders (CMD) and there is a high rate of infancy, early childhood undernutrition in these countries, there are few researches studying association between maternal CMD and their child nutritional status. br Aim of the study: br To determine the magnitude of under nutrition among children in the age group (6- 24 months), Minia city, Egypt, to examine the impact of maternal mental health on nutritional status of their children, to determine contribution of various risk factors in children under nutrition. br Research hypothesis: br Maternal common mental disorders associated with child under nutrition. br Subjects and method: br A cross sectional study was conducted on 350 children in the age group (6-24 months) attending the four health offices of El- Minia city during the period between November 2012 to April 2013. Data were collected by a questionnaire which included socio demographic, feeding practices, child related data and screening for maternal common mental disorders (CMD) by WHO questionnaire. Child weight and length were measured. After measuring child weight and length, child nutritional status assessed by converting these measurements to weight for age, length for age and weight for length and this required using of world health organization standard growth -#99;-#104;-#97;-#114;ts.
