Abstract

Open extensor tendon disruptions are common and can result in substantial disability. While much less attention has traditionally been paid to extensor tendon injuries when compared to flexor tendon injuries, recent data indicate that these injuries may not fare as once expected. The intricate and complex anatomy of the extensor tendon system can make accurate diagnosis difficult under certain circumstances. Ideal treatment may be complicated by the unforgiving nature of residual tendon deformity, and the presence of associated, yet often times obscured, injuries. Multiple factors, including, mechanism of injury, anatomic zone involved, associated injuries to bone and soft tissue may affect both the Treatment method and the surgical outcome. In general, the comparison of studies on extensor tendon repairs is limited by the heterogeneity of patients Included, suture techniques and the post-operative treatment regime. Excellent outcomes are possible to achieve after extensor tendon repair with proper management of the injuries, by experienced surgeons, in well equipped place. The proper selection of the repair technique and the post operative care will not only restore the function, but will do so with least complications and in shortest time. This study gave a comprehensive presentation of the anatomy, biomechanics, examination, treatment and rehabilitation of acute extensor tendon injury of the hand. It presenting to us patients with such injuries that were managed in the Menofia university hospital and shepen el kom teaching hospital in a specified period of time, detailing the surgical treatment they received and the rehabilitation program they were subjected to. Then the outcome of management was displayed. A limitation to this study is that not all zones of injury were included; also more patients are needed to be able to get more statistically significant results. In further studies we recommend the attempt of more repairs with more rehabilitation methods demonstration and comparison.
