Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate the association of diabetic autonomic neuropathy with histopathological and clinical manifestations of reflux oesophagitis in 70 subjects classified into the following groups: Group (I) : 10 patients type I D.M. Group (II) : 20 patients type II D.M. Group (III) : 20 patients obese non diabetic. Group(IV) : 20 non obese, non diabetic subjects as a control group. All selected subjects underwent the following: A- Full History taking (including duration of diabetes) and complete clinical examination (including BMI, waist circumference and Waist/Hip ratio). B- Cardiovascular autonomic reflexes (HRV during deep breathing, Heart rate response to standing , Valsalva’s maneuver, postural changes in systolic BP). C- Fasting blood sugar (F.B.S.) , Fasting insulin (to asses HOMA-IR) and HbA1c. D- Test for microalbuminuria and serum creatinine. E- Upper Gastrointestinal endoscopy and lower end esophageal biopsy. We found that, there was no statistically significant difference as regards gastrointestinal complaints between diabetic and non diabetic patients. Moreover, diabetic patients were discovered to have the highest prevalence of normal endoscopic findings (80% for group I and 85% for group II). Also we found that, obese non diabetic patients showed the highest prevalence of reflux oesophagitis (65%) In our study we concluded also that there is no association of diabetic autonomic neuropathy with histopathological and clinical manifestations of reflux esophagitis. |
