Abstract

INTRODUCTION
The choice of animal models for a particular kind of research is
a matter of critical importance, and warrants special concern from
different angles.
In view of this concept, rodents have been selected as a target for
the present investigation dealing with certain cytogenetical and
histological aspects.
The reasons lying behind this decision are attributed mainly to
the high availability of different species and strains of both non-desert
and desert types of these animals, easy provision of suitable mitotic
figures from them as well as satisfactorily spreading of their individual
chromosomes which makes their staining and illustration an easy task.
In this concern, the family Dipodidae has represented the first
choice for the presently intended purpose. This group includes weakly
specialized forms (Jumping mice) as well as highly specialized desert
forms which are known as jerboas. Worthwhile is that the latter group
has received marked interest from the evolutionary point of view.
