Abstract

BCC and SCC represent the most common malignant neoplasm of the skin. SCC is an aggressive tumor that usually metastasizes to the regional lymph nodes while BCC is characterized by local invasion and contagious spread. SK is non-cancerous growths on the surface of the skin which consider a benign form of skin tumor. KA is a rapidly evolving tumor, composed of keratinizing squamous cells originating in pilosebaceous follicles and resolving spontaneously if left untreated.Galectin-3, a β-galactoside-binding protein, is implicated in cell growth, adhesion, differentiation, angiogenesis and metastasis in multiple tumours. Galectin-3 may act as a regulator of epithelial tumor progression and development through various signaling pathways. The aim of this study was to compare immunohistochemical expression of galectin-3 in BCC, SCC, SK and KA.In order to accomplish this aim, the study was included 10 paraffin blocks of BCC, 10 paraffin blocks of SCC , 10 paraffin blocks of SK , 10 paraffin blocks of KA and 8 paraffin blocks of normal healthy skin were used as controls. All were collected from the archives of Pathology Department, Tanta University Hospitals from May 2012 to May 2013. The available clinical data was collected from the pathological requests as regard age, gender and the site of lesion.
