Abstract 1. INTRODUCTION The northwest coast of Egypt extends westward about 600 km from longitude 290 50’ in the east at Alexandria to_ longitude 250 1 0’ at El·Sallum in the west. 4\s a result of the growing population in Egypt, the north-west coast region has attracted the attention of many governments for planning several agricultural and settlement projects. - Research on soils, water resources, geology and other subjects has been initiated at many sites along the coast. A succession of ridges of dunes and depressions from the Mediterranean sea to the Libyan plateau characterize the topography of the north west coast area of Egypt. So, the problem of wind erosion and dune encroachment in this area are considered to be a real threat which not only affect the agricultural potentialities of arable land, but also cause severe losses to human habitation, communication, transportation and manpower productivity. It is the result of climatic, soil and human factors such as aridity, high wind velocity and physical characteristics of the sand. Effective control of the climatic factors is beyond man’s ability, yet he could manage to modify and adjust the physical characteristics of the soil and attempt to halt or reduce as |
