Abstract

Epilepsy is one of the most common serious neurological disorders. World wide, it is estimated that 10.5 million children under 15 years have active epilepsy, representing about 25% of the global epilepsy population. There are several types of epilepsy that are treated by different drugs, carbamazepine(CBZ) and sodium valproate(VPA) are the most commonly used conventional AEDs. Some studies reported that some AEDs may disrupt pulmonary functions and lung biopsy in some cases revealed interstitial pneumonitis. The Aim of this work was to study the effect of sodium valproate and carbamazepine on pulmonary function in children with idiopathic epilepsy. This study was conducted on 50 children suffering from idiopathic epilepsy who were receiving VPA or CBZ for at least 3 months. All children were attendants of the Pediatric Neurology Unit, Tanta University Hospital. 25 apparently healthy age and sex matched children served as a control group. They grouped into 3 groups.
