Abstract

Human beings engage in sexual intercourse not only for reproductive reasons, but also for pleasure. It therefore becomes important to study the effects that somebody areas (erogenous zones) play in facilitating sexual arousal as a means to increase the pleasurable aspects of sexual intercourse.
Sexual pleasure is elicited when the erogenous zones of the body are stimulated (tactile stimulation) and this in return sends a signal to the brain which then interprets the stimulus as either pleasurable or sexual.
Our study was carried out on 160 married women with regular sexual practice using self filling questionnaires, usable questionnaires were 150. Privacy was guaranteed for all the participants. The questionnaire included 19 items designed by the investigators. Only some items were selected from the female sexual function index (FSFI), other questions were added to suit the purpose of study.
Our study reported the breasts/the nipples as the commonest extra-genital zone that gave high arousal (84.6%), followed by the lips (83.9%), followed by the neck /the nape of the neck (75.5%) then followed by the ears(55.2%).
Our study showed that erogenous zones play an important role not only in female sexual desire(activated through tactile stimulation), sexual arousal and excitation ,But also they play a very important role in female orgasm.
Although orgasm is characteristically a response to genital stimulation, other types of sensory stimulation also can generate orgasm. For example, nipples and breasts stimulation plays a very important role in sexual arousal and orgasm, the orgasm-inducing effect of breasts or nipples stimulation may be related to activation of the region of the paracentral lobule that overlaps with the region activated by clitoral, vaginal, or cervical stimulation. This finding is consistent with 12% of our participants who reported that nipple/breast stimulation is erotogenic and can elicit orgasms.
