Abstract I:N’TRODUC’TION AND Aift OF 1”HE WORK Mace et al. (1984), raised the question of impairment of urate excretion in patients with cardiac diseases. On serial measurements of serum uric acid levels and the urinary clearance of uric acid, they indicated that these levels may change depending on patient’s clinical and hence dynamic state. If a patient’s clinical condition worsens, the serum uric acid levels increases and the uric acid clearance rate decreases, there is a significant relationship between degree of polycythemia and uric acid level in serum of patients with congenital cyanotic heart diseases. It was also postulated that serum uric acid can be affected by medications as in patients given iron therapy. The present work aims to assess serum uric acid in patients with cyanotic congenital heart diseases and patients with rheumatic heart disease, and correlating these levels with age, sex, RllC’ s mass and hematocrit value in an attempt to evaluate the urate metabolism in Egyptian children with cardiac disease. |
