Abstract

The study of fungi in marine environment, especially those associated with algae or algicolous fungi, is in its infancy. As now few studies have been carried out to describe the community of algicolous fungi. Thus, the aim of the present study was to isolate and describe the culturable part of mycobiota associated with healthy marine macroalgae in the Red Sea. This is an important step in understanding their abundance, diversity and factors influencing their variability and composition. The composition and distribution of macroalgal hosts and their algicolous fungi were studied and related to variation in seawater environment. The ability of algicolous fungi to degrade macroalgal components and produce specific enzymes that enable them to grow was studied. Antioxidant activities of hydrophilic and hydrophobic metabolites from some algicolous fungi as well as phlorotannins and fucoidan from Sargassum sp. were studied in vitro.
