Abstract

I N T R 0 D U C T I 0 N
The gladiolus (flower) can be considered as one of
the most attractive and desirable flowers in the international
market owing to its attractive appearance and
long survival as a cut flower in the vase.
In comparison with other cut flowers the gladiolus
flower is one of the most expensive flowers after Sterlyzia
but it is most important flower from the point of view of
exportation, if compared with roses, carnation, gerbera
tuberosa and strelitzi~ as it is the most commonly
known in the European market and the ~ost wanted flower
during christmas , Table ( 1) presents, the an quantity and value
of flowers exported from ~gypt during 1979-1981.
Owing to the environmental conditions during the
winter months, Egypt is considered as one of the most
potential areas for the growing of this flower durin~
this season to be ready for exportation during the~ mas
season when there is a great demand for this flower in
all European countries even in the Netherlands, which
is the prime exporter and grower of this flower, together
