Abstract Vascular complications of diabetes mellitus are the largest an4 most iut:ractable problems, as the rate of morbidity are strikingly increased between diabetics due to ¥8SC’Ular di eases. Different studies made on patients witb diabetic -.ascular di..<>eases reported lipid metabolism aboormalities and baematological alteratiODS. These changes may enhance the development of tbe vascular disease. Among tbe haematological altrations in diabetic patients different platelet function abnormalities affecting adhesion, aggregation and release reaction were reported especially in cases with vascular diseases. Betathromboglobulin (B-TG) is a platelet specific protein released during platelet aggregation. Its raised level indicates in vivo platelet activation. In this work, plasma level of B.TG was estimated in newly diagnosed diabetics and compared to tbat level in normal healthy individuals in order to study the potential thrombotic risk in such patients. The study comprised 30 newly diagnosed diabetic patients. They were selected from diabetic outpatients clinic of Ain Shams Hospital. They were not oo antidiabetic treatment. IS healthy individuals with normal blood sugar level were also selected as a control group. Kidney function tests ( specific gra’fity of urine and creatinine clearance) were done for all subja:ts in this study and those with abnormal functions were excluded ro avoid false rise of 8-TG resli.lts. State of diabetes mellitus was also studied by estimation of fasting and post-prandial blood sugar levels. The results of plasma B-TG obtained revealed a significant rise of its level in the diabetic group as compared to the control (P <0.01). No correlation was found between the level of B-TG in plasma and the blood sugar level ( r ”’ 0.3 - P > 0.05). In cooclusion the present resli.lts pro’fide an additional e’fidence that platelet function in diabetes mellitus is abnormal. It is recommended to study the relationship between haematological and biochemical abnormalities in diabetes mellitus to establish whether platelet functioo abnormality is the cause or a consequence of vascular endothelium disease of this disorder. |
