Abstract
Stem cells (SCs) are commonly defined as cells capable of self-renewal through replication and differentiating into specific lineages. They have 3 main characteristics; self renewability, high plasticity and potency. Types of stem cells include embryo-¬derived stem cells, fetal stem cells, adult stem cells, and umbilical cord stem cells.The present essay aimed to review how stem cells can be useful in management of different psychiatric disorders.Research on the potential use of stem cell transplantation for AD has lagged Car behind that of many other neurodegenerative disorders. However, it was found that stem cells could provide a means to deliver neurotrophins to thediseased brain, potentially modulating endogenous synaptic plasticity and enhancing neuronal survival.The established iPSCs lines from schizophrenia patients with a defined DISC 1 mutation provided a useful resource for investigating the function of DISC 1 in human neurodevelopment either in Schizophrenia or ASD (with double diagnosis with either Schizophrenia or Bipolar disorders).MSCs may offer a novel therapeutic to ameliorate the immune abnormalities apparent in some children with autism.
