Abstract Introduction AsyMptomatic Bacteriuria during pregnancy: Pregnant wome11 are particularly susceptible to acute urinary tract infect.ion (UTI) and physicians caring for these women have long demonstrated concern tor gravidas who develop acute pyelonephritis or cystitis. Conversely, there are pregnant women who demonstrate significant bacteriuria without symptoms and until the past two decades, patients recieved relatively little attention. these In 1956 Kass devised a technique for distinguishing true bacteriuria from bacterial contamination using a clean voided method of urine collection and quant1tave culture techniques. These innovations made possible the detection of asymptomatic bacteriuria in large population groups without having to resort to urethr·al Cdt.hcterization. Bacteriuria usually remains silent unless an element of urinary tract obstructuon is superimposed. ( Gary Cuninqham, 1973 ) • In normal pregnancy physiologic relaxation of the ureters and renal pelvis occur. The enlarging uterus soon contributes an element of mechanical obstruction and the net effect of these two processes: i. e. loss of ureteral tone |
