Abstract

The importance of sugar beet (~~!! ~!lg_!H.ll L.) in
the economy of world sugar production have sean in the
fact that nearly 40 percent of world sugar production is
obtained from beet.
Egypt produce only about 60 percent of its sugar
demand.
Various factors are limiting the enhancement of
sugar production from sugar-cane (§!££h!r~ £ffi£ill!£~~
L.: .Thus expanding the growing area of sugar beet is a tul.tional
strategy to minimize the gap between sugar consumption
and production.
This strategy of expanding sugar beet cultivation
in Egypt is basad on the suitability of beet to be grown
in the newly reclaimed areas, the low requirement of beet
to irrigation water as water required for producing one ton
of sugar from beet is nearly one third of that required
for producing the same quantity from cane crop. In addition
sugar beet is u winter crop and lasts only about six monthes.
and hence a sunmur crop could be grown to maximize the net
profit from the unit area and enable in narrowing the gap of
other foodstuff.
