Abstract The importance of sugar beet (~~!! ~!lg_!H.ll L.) in the economy of world sugar production have sean in the fact that nearly 40 percent of world sugar production is obtained from beet. Egypt produce only about 60 percent of its sugar demand. Various factors are limiting the enhancement of sugar production from sugar-cane (§!££h!r~ £ffi£ill!£~~ L.: .Thus expanding the growing area of sugar beet is a tul.tional strategy to minimize the gap between sugar consumption and production. This strategy of expanding sugar beet cultivation in Egypt is basad on the suitability of beet to be grown in the newly reclaimed areas, the low requirement of beet to irrigation water as water required for producing one ton of sugar from beet is nearly one third of that required for producing the same quantity from cane crop. In addition sugar beet is u winter crop and lasts only about six monthes. and hence a sunmur crop could be grown to maximize the net profit from the unit area and enable in narrowing the gap of other foodstuff. |
