Abstract The British Working Class There are people who would argue today that terms like ”class”, ”working class”, and ”class war ” are meaningless because classes no longer exist, and to talk about the ”working class” is to be out- of- date and really rather old -fashioned. Today , new vocabulary has come into fashion and modern euphemisms for working class are now ”working people”, ”workpeople ”, ”ordinary ramifies”.” the less well - off ” and ”less privileged sections of the community” . These terms are frequently used by politicians and commentators for various reasons. Yet, most social scientists would reject the argument that classes no longer exist because the extent of class inequality is still great . What I am concerned w1th here, in this thesis is the notion that class is important and that class and class - background largely determines a person’s income attainment, type of housing accommodation, level of educational achievement, the kind of life people lead and the kind of things they are able to do. |
