Abstract This study aimed to assess the prevalence of remnants of conception after surgical evacuation of first trimestric abortion This study was conducted at the patients attending the obstetric emergency department in Ain shams university maternity hospital in the period between August 2011to December 2011 on 300 patients to whom surgical evacuation was indicated after first trimestric abortion In this study all patients passed through history taking, clinical examination, Trans-vaginal ultrasound, laboratory investigations, evacuation and curettage and lastly pathology for remnants of products. In this study the Trans -vaginal ultrasound was done to the 300 cases pre and post evacuation and found that 25 cases (8.3%) were having incomplete evacuation (Group A) and 275 cases (91.7%) were found to have complete evacuation (Group B) In this study the mean endometrial thickness of the Group A were 11.6 ± 3.1mm, and it ranged from 4 to 19 mm, while it were 9.8 ± 2.1mm and it ranged from 6 to 14 mm for Group B, and the cutoff point of endometrial thickness of group A was 17.8 mm while in Group B were 14mm In this study the histopathologic examination of the studied biopsies resulted in 17 patients (68%) diagnosed as positive for retained products of conception while 8 patients (32%) diagnosed as negative for retained products of conception. from this study it’s concluded that the use of trans-vaginal ultrasound (TVS) is indicated for assessment of remnants of conception after surgical evacuation of first trimesteric abortion. |
