Abstract

Although Pesticides constitute the major source of potential environmental hazard to man and animals in Egypt as they have been used extensively. The aim of this study was to study the effect of abamectin on the rabbit dams and their foeti prenatally and postnatally as well as its effect on haematological, biochemical parameters and histopathology of different organs. Fourty-two mature female New Zealand white rabbits were randomly distributed into 7 groups (6 for each). The first group has been used as control and received only distilled water. The second group has been orally administered 2mg\kg B.wt of abamectin from the 7th to the 20th day of pregnancy. The third group has been orally administered 2mg\kg B.wt of abamectin from the 21st to the 29th day of pregnancy. The fourth group has been orally administered 1mg\kg B.wt of abamectin from the 7th to the 20th day of pregnancy. The fifth group has been orally administered 1mg\kg B.wt of abamectin from the 21st to the 29th day of pregnancy. The sixth group has orally received 2mg\kg B.wt of abamectin from the first day of parturition till the 30th lactational day (weaning). The seventh group has been used as control for the postnatal group (the sixth group).
The results showed a significant decrease in the body weight and the crown-rump of foeti from the dams orally administered different doses of abamectin at different periods of pregnancy. Moreover, abamectin has induced skeletal malformations in the foeti represented by an incomplete ossification of sternebrae and an absence of ossification of xiphisternebrae.
The haematological parameters of rabbit dams have revealed a significant decrease in WBCs count, but Hb concentration and PCV values have not been altered. As for the biochemical parameters of rabbit dams, they have revealed a significant increase in the activities of AST and ALP enzymes, while the activity of ALT enzyme has not been altered. Abamectin has also induced a significant decrease in the activities of GST and SOD enzymes and a significant increase in the levels of NO. Abamectin has induced a significant decrease in the body weight of foeti from dams that have orally administered with abamectin postnatally. Haematological parameters of foeti have revealed a significant increase in PCV values and WBCs count, while Hb concentration has not been altered. Biochemical parameters of foeti have revealed a significant increase in the activities of ALT, AST, ALP, and SOD enzymes and in the levels of NO, while, GST enzyme has significantly decreased
