Abstract Hand transplantation is a surgical procedure that has evolved from collaboration between reconstructive and transplant surgery. It was done for the first time in 1964 but the first time that composite tissue allotransplantation (CTA) became a future clinical possibility was in 1998. Technically ,the procedure is similar to hand replantation with few differences and the microsurgical technique required have been well established for many years. Functional recovery following hand transplantation is a prolonged process with continuing improvements years after surgery and the rehabilitation professional must help recipients during this prolonged period. . |
