Abstract

LI1ere iL’•c· .lciJC:, L<’\,eractllle; lactors wnJ.ch influence
the activi·ty :wl .toeT”Giscence of pesticides iL soils.
A brief review of these would include soil pE, soil
texture, organic naLtel”, cation exchange, pre!valent
cacions or other 1;;:L’lerals, chemical reactions 1 and mechanical
analysis, Environmental factors such as temperature,
moistun;, leach:D1g1 sunlight, microbial activity,
plant growth and rizosphere are also highly important.
The physical and chemical characteristics of the pesticide
itself determine hou it responds to all the above factors.
fi1uch of the research on nonbiologlical detoxication
has been conce:nt:;.”ated on photodecomposition, volatilization,
soil adsorption 2~d two soil associated chemical
reactions: hydroxylation and dealkylation. In addition,
codistillation has been suggested as a possible mechanism
for loss of pesticide activity (S-triaz:D1e)·. Since biological
an.d nonbiolof;ical reactions are both chemical in
nature, the same corT’e.latious would be expected between
soil properties and t11eir microbially-catalyzed decOI:Jposition
or detoxication reactions occurriilc in the absence
of aY.ij/ biolor.:ic.:aJ_ ;~ent.
