Abstract

Our study proved that pulmonary congestion is highly prevalent in symptomatic and asymptomatic dialysis patients. Chest ultrasound is a reliable technique that can detect pulmonary congestion at a pre-clinical stage in end stage renal disease. It is a simple, easy to perform and quick technique to estimate lung water in dialysis patients and to assess the alteration in pleural line. It was found that standard ultrafiltration dialysis markedly reduce lung water assessed by the decrease in the comet tail score after dialysis.
The results of this study provides a new working hypothesis that a simplified US B-lines assessment may be an additional, useful imaging method in the evaluation of volume status in dialysis patients. Another point of research is to test whether dialysis intensification in patients with asymptomatic lung congestion can prevent premature death and reduce the risk of heart failure and cardiac events.
Recommendations:
-Lung congestion is highly prevalent and often asymptomatic among patients with kidney failure, so nephrologists should keep in mind.
-Chest ultrasound can detect asymptomatic lung congestion in dialysis patients and can predict their risk of dying prematurey or experiencing heart attacks, so all dialysis patients should undergo chest ultrasound. This will help to improve patients health and prevent cardiovascular deaths in dialysis patients.
