Abstract
Organo-phosphorus Compounds
~he science of syn~hetic o .. ·gano ... phosphorus compounds
started by ~sseigne 1 •2 when he prepared d crude mixture
of alkyl phosphate by heating alcohols with syrupy phosphoric
acid.
In (1840) Tenard and others), studied the phosphine
derivatives end since that time the chemistr1 of organophosphorus
compounds have been developed rapidly. The development
end growth of organo-phosphorus chemistry ere greatly
contributed to Michaelis end his co-workers during the letter
half of the nineteenth century. They synthesized a variety
of organo-phosphorus compounds particularly those with
”carbon-phosphorus” bond. This work is continued end extended
by Arbusow specially in the field of phosphorus acid
triesters end their transformation to dialkyl phosphates
thromgh the so called Arbusov reaction2•
The reaction of phosphorus trihalide with alcohols to
produce alkyl halides has been known for many yeers4-l5, but
study of the phosphorus containing side products has been
limited to the phosphites16•
One of the first reported reactions of phosphorus
trihalide with alcohols was by Menschutken4• A side product
