Since Meniere’s original description, in 186I,
of the disease that goes by his name, a variety of
~edical and surgical therapies have been advocated.
In 1926, George Portmann believed that Meniere’s
disease was due to a hypertension of the endolymph
and successfully drained the endolymph by opening
the endolymphatic sac, 12 years before Hallpike and
Cairns first demonstrated the histopathological findings
of endolymphatic hydrops in patients with Meniere’s
disease, The operating microscope and modern otologic
techniques have made many otologists, especially in
the last two decades, to revive Portmann’s endolymphatic
sac surgery. Many techniques have been presented
aiming at modifying the original Portrnann’s operation
or suggesting new procedures for the surgical decompression
and dra-inage of the endclymphatic sac for
the treatnent of Meniere’s disease,
The aim of thio work is to review the different
techniques employed in sur~ery of the endolymphatic
sac, to evaluate the results of these techniques and
to determine their efficacies in the trer•t~ent of
Meniere’s dise:1se,
