Abstract

Postpartum blues is a transitional depressive state that viewed as a highly prevalent mental health problem. This phenomenon characterized by depressed mood, fatigue and tearfulness as well as mild insomnia. It affects 50-80% of new mothers. It begins 3-4 days after delivery, peak between postpartum days 5 and 7 and resolve by day 12. A randomized controlled trial was used on a randomly selected 184 pregnant women, under the following inclusion criteria: women post-vaginal delivery or post cesarean section, their age ranged between 20-35 years, primipara or multipara, free from obstetric or psychiatric problems on current pregnancy, had single full term baby and willing to share in the research. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of educational information on reducing postpartum blues. The study was conducted in the Postpartum Inpatient Ward and Labor and Delivery Unit of Obstetrics and Gynecology department at Mansoura University Hospitals in Mansoura city. Tools of data collection Two tools were used for data collection: Tool I: Structured Interviewing questionnaire designed by researcher and divided into four parts to assess the socio demographic characteristics, obstetrical history, details of current pregnancy, woman’s social history. Tool II: Arabic version of Beck Depression Inventory (Beck et al, 1988). 74 Results of the study revealed that:  The intervention group had lower percentage of blues at end of 1st week postpartum than the control group (5.4% versus 20.7%).  There is a significant positive correlation between women age and BDI total score at 1st week postpartum.  There is a significant association between the educational levels, family income, occupation and BDI total score at 1st week postpartum.  Concerning obstetric history, the present study did not show significant correlation with gravidity, parity, abortion or gestational age and occurrence of postpartum blues.  As regards to current delivery data, no correlations were found between mode of delivery and admission to NICU and postpartum blues. This study concluded that, introducing postpartum educational information on postpartum psychological disorders including blues is an effective method on relieving postpartum blues. In the light of this study results, it is recommended that the information related to postpartum blues should be integrated into routine postpartum discharge care in general practice.
