Abstract

New ligands are prepared and used in this study namely, (E)-3-(2-benzylidenehydrazinyl)-3-oxo-N-(p-tolyl)propanamide (H2BHAH), (E)-3-(2-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)hydrazinyl)-3-oxo-N-(p-tolyl)propanamide (H2SHAH) and (E)-3-oxo-3-(2-(2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene)hydrazinyl)-N-(p-tolyl)propanamide (H2IHAH). These ligands are prepared from 3-hydrazinyl-3-oxo-N-(p-tolyl)propanamide and benzaldehyde, salisaldhyde, or isatine. The isolated metal complexes derived from the interaction of these ligands with Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Hg(II), Zn(II), Fe(III), Pd(II) and U(VI)O2 are characterized by conventional physical and chemical methods and three types of solid complexes are isolated in which the ligands may react in neutral, mononegative and/or binegative manner. The potential coordination sites are determined using the IR and 1H NMR spectra. The structures of the isolated solid complexes are proposed on the basis of the spectral (IR, 1H NMR, TG, DTG, UV-vis., mass spectra) and magnetic studies. The conductometric titrations are done experimentally by measuring the conductance of Ni(II) and Cu(II) in absence and presence of ligands (H2BHAH) and (H2SHAH) in mixed solvent (DMF-methanol) at 290.15K. from the conductivity data the association constants, Gibbs free energies of association, formation constants and the Gibbs free energies of formation for the formed complexes between the salts and the ligands are calculated. Computational studies for all compounds are carried out to confirm the geometry of the isolated complexes. Thermal decomposition of some solid complexes under an atmosphere of nitrogen is investigated. In order to assess the influenced of the structural properties of the ligands and the type of the metal on thermal behavior of the complexes, the order (n) and the heat of activation (Ea) of the various decomposition stages are determined from the TG and DTG using the coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger methods. Biological activity (antimicrobial, antioxidant and antitumor) for the ligands under investigation and their Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), U(VI)O2, Zn(II), Hg(II), Pd(II) and Fe(III) complexes are carried out.
