Abstract
Dental caries results in localized dissolution and destruction of the calcified tooth structure. Neglecting the treatment of this disease could also endanger the tooth pulp. Thus this in vitro study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of Papacárie and the conventional method in caries removal in primary teeth. Twenty freshly extracted primary molar teeth with deep dentin caries and no enamel coverage were selected for the study, ten for the microbiological assessment (culture and light microscopic analysis) and ten for the hardness assessment. After preparation of the teeth and removal of the caries with the conventional method and with Papacárie, the teeth assigned for the microbiological assessment were submitted to the culture test and then prepared for histologic analysis and examined for the presence of bacterial deposits under light microscope. While for the microhardness assessment, the microhardness test was performed on the polished dentin after caries removal using the Vickers hardness test.
