Abstract

During different industrial activities such as phosphoric acid and sugar industries, huge quantity of wastes is being generated as by-products and causes major environmental problems for their storage and disposal. On the other hand, fertilizer industry is an important industry for assessing the plant requirements. But this industry faces a serious problem of fertilizer product stabilization under the handling and storage conditions. Therefore, in this study attempts were made for solving these problems; these
attempts were achieved by using two wastes produced from the phosphoric acid and sugar industries as conditioners; one is internal conditioner represented by phosphogypsum and the other is external conditioner (coating agent) and represented by molasses.
A number of compound fertilizer (NPK fertilizer) formulations based on phosphogypsum as a filler have been prepared. The main physico-chemical properties of the prepared formulations, such as chemical composition, granulometric composition and crushing strength of granules were examined by standard methods. A comparative study with the other fertilizer formulations both containing bentonite clay filler and the other containing no fillers was done. The results showed that the prepared formulations using phosphogypsum as filler exhibited improvement in NPK fertilizers quality which notified in terms of physical and chemical characteristics compared with the reference NPK fertilizers (containing no fillers) and those containing bentonite clay filler.
This improvement in NPK fertilizers quality is considered an evidence of the positive effect of phosphogypsum waste on the NPK fertilizers industry hand-in-hand with the environmental protection and the plant nutrition.
Studies on coating the commercial granular single super phosphate fertilizers with cane molasses as coating agent were performed; it was achieved by coating the surface of the fertilizer granules with different ratios of molasses-water solutions. The
main product quality parameters of the prepared coated fertilizers such as chemical composition, granulometric composition and crushing strength of fertilizer granules were examined by standard methods. It was found that the best mixing ratio for coating commercial granular single super phosphate fertilizers is 1: 2 (Molasses: Water). It was observed that upon coating the fertilizer granules with this ratio under the recommended conditions of 30 ml/100g, the coated granules kept their free flowing properties and showed good stability during handling and storage conditions. In this case the improvement in fertilizer use efficiency in terms of
nutrient uptake and reduction of dust emission was obtained.
