Abstract The current study investigated the effect of a short-term webQuest program on developing first year preparatory stage students’ English writing skills and their attitudes towards writing. The current study has one group pre/post test design. A group of 36 first year preparatory students were randomly selected from one of Fayoum experimental language schools, namely Azza Zidan language school, to be the study group. All students’ age ranged from thirteen to fourteen years old. To determine the most important writing skills to be developed through the webQuest program, a writing skills checklist was designed and validated by a jury of specialists. Based on these skills, a pre-post writing test was developed and used. Also, a writing scoring rubric was developed and validated by a jury of specialists to assess students’ writing skills. An attitude scale utilizing the 3-point Likert-type format and having three subscales reflecting the attitude components( affective, cognitive and behavioral) was also constructed and administered before and after the implementation of the program to measure students’ attitudes towards writing. The webQuest program was taught in the first semester of the academic year 2012-2013. The study results showed evidence that the webQuest program had a positive effect on developing the study group students’ English writing skills and their attitudes towards writing. |
