Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease state characterized by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible. It includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis or any combination of these disorders.
Chronic bronchitis has been defined as the presence of chronic productive cough for three months during each of two successive years. Also emphysema refers to abnormal enlargement of the distal air spaces and destruction of the lung distal to the terminal bronchiole.
Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) plays a key role in the management of COPD. It offers supervised exercise and education for those with breathing problems. The nurse plays a key role in identifying potential candidates for pulmonary rehabilitation, and in facilitating and reinforcing the material learned in rehabilitation program.
Aim of the study:
The aim of this study was to assess and compare the effect of diaphragmatic breathing and pursed-lips breathing on pulmonary functions of COPD patients.
This study was carried out on sixty adult patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at Medical Chest disease Inpatient Unit at Alexandria Main University Hospital.
Sample:
The subjects of the study included a convenient sample of 60 adult patients of both sexes with the diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, free from co-morbid diseases that affect ABG result. The sample was divided randomly into two equal groups, 30 patients each.
 Group (I) received diaphragmatic breathing training.
 Group (II) received pursed-lips breathing.
