Abstract

A series of pot experiments was conducted at the Experimental Station of Horticulture Research Institute, Giza, Egypt in two successive seasons of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. The aim was to study the effect of some pre-germination treatments on seeds germination of some ornamental palms used in landscape. The chosen palms were Butia capitata, (Mart.) Becc.; Livistona decepiens, Becc and Sabal palmetto, (Walt.) Lodd ex Schult and Schult, as their seeds were subjected to different pre-germination treatments including soaking in tap water, soaking in GA3 and Soaking in H2SO4. The following results were obtained: 1) All treatments increased germination percentage, and germination rate index and recorded the least days for germination, as well as, the mean of germination rate. Also, similar trend detected in transplant growth permeations transplants growth parameters represented by plant height, root length and fresh and dry weights of both aerial parts and roots. 2) The best results were obtained from the treatment of soaking seeds of Butia capitata, in tap water for 6 days followed by soaking in tap water for 3 days. For Livistona decepiens, this resulted from the treatment of soaking seeds in GA3 at 500 ppm followed by soaking in H2SO4 for 6 min., while for Sabal palmetto, this resulted from soaking seeds in concentrated H2SO4 for 6 and 3 minutes. 3) All pre-germination treatments increased total indoles while decreased phenols in the seeds in a parallel trend as that in germination and transplants growth parameters.
