Abstract

The present study was performed to evaluate both clinically and radiographically the effect of Nano hydroxyapatite (NanoBone) used as space filler on healing of significant jaw bone defects.
The study was conducted on ten patients who were referred to Oral Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University, and their age ranging from 25 to 40 years old. They were free from any relevant disease that would contraindicate surgical intervention or affect the healing of the surgical wound.
Under local anesthesia, a surgical incision was made to create a flap for sufficient visualization and management. After reflection of the flap, enucleation of the whole pathological tissue, complete curettage and irrigation with sterile normal saline was done.
Apicectomy was performed for the teeth involved in the lesion. Thereafter, application of the graft material Nano hydroxyapatite (NanoBone) was done. Finally, repositioning of the flap and suturing with 3/0 black silk sutures was performed.
Post-operative antibiotic and analgesics were prescribed, proper oral hygiene were maintained by instructing the patients to use warm mouth wash and soft diet was recommended for one week postoperatively and at the end of the first week the patient resumed his normal diet.
The follow-up phase was performed at intervals of baseline, third and six months for evaluating clinically postoperative pain and radiographically to evaluate the area of bone defect and the density of newly formed bone.
The obtained data were statistically analyzed, tabulated and represented by graphs.
