Abstract

The present study aimed to determine the patterns of 3238C/G Apo C-III gene polymorphism and its relation with oxLDL concentration in patients with essential hypertension in Sinai area.
One hundred and thirty control subjects mean age (48.22±10.49y) and one hundred and twenty hypertensive patients mean age (49.13±11.68) were included in the study. Both groups are gender matched.
Systolic BP, diastolic BP and BMI were statistically significant in patients compared to controls.
Serum lipid profiles (Total Cholesterol, TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C) were measured for the study groups. There was a significant increase in Triglyceride, and LDL-C in hypertensive than in normal control subjects. In contrast to significant decrease in HDL-C in hypertensive than in normal control subjects. On the other hand, no significant difference in total cholesterol level was detected.
OxLDL was measured using ELISA technique for both groups. There was a significant increase in hypertensive than in normal control subjects.
For the Apo C-III 3238C/G polymorphism 72% (n=86) of hypertensive patients had the CC genotype, 28 % (n=34) had the CG genotype. This was significantly different from the distribution in control subjects.
The frequency of G allele carriage was significantly higher in patients than in control group (14% vs. 7% respectively, p = 0.013), thereby defining a population with a higher risk of essential hypertension compared to C allele carriers [OR= 2.09 CI (1.16 – 3.78)].
In conclusion, the current study revealed that, in Egyptian hypertensive patients, carriers of G allele at 3238C/G of the Apo C-III gene was associated with susceptibility to the disease in Sinai area.
Although these effects were studied on a relatively limited sample, they support the possible role of the apo C-III gene in pathogenesis of hypertension and, in general the role of genetic influence on the control of the disease.
Preventive measures and earlier interventions should be done for normal subjects with (CG) genotype of Apo C-III 3238C/G gene polymorphism as they may be more susceptible to hypertension than others.
