Abstract

Puerperal infection remains a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. The primary risk factor is cesarean delivery, which increases the risk 5- to 20-fold.Vaginal cleaning before cesarean section can reduce both endometritis and surgical site infection. Aim of the study: the aim of this study was to examine the effect of using Povidone-Iodine solution 10% solution for cleaning of the vagina before cesarean section on reducing post cesarean section &postpartum infection. Design; quasi – experimental design was adopted in this study. Setting: the study was carried out at the operative room of obstetric and gynecological department in Suez Canal University Hospital in Ismailia city. Sample: convenient method of sampling was followed to recruit 200 full terms pregnant women underwent elective cesarean section. By systemic allocation study sample was assigned into study group (vaginal wash, with 10% Povidone Iodine) and control group (no vaginal wash, routine hospital care). Tools and procedure: Structure interviewing schedule used to collect needed data. Physical assessment record, Visual analogue and Follow up records were used for medical and physical condition. Results: Statistical significant difference between study and control groups was noted in post-partum period in temperature &pulse p< 0.001, and surgical site infections X2 =9.37, p = 0.049. Conclusion: vaginal cleaning by 10 % povidone iodine prior to cesarean section reduced surgical site infection. Recommendation Use povidone iodine for vaginal cleansing as a regular practice prior to cesarean deliveries is recommended
