Abstract There are many ways for management of temporomandibular disorders. This study was done on 20 patients suffering from disc displacement with reduction. Patients were diagnosed by using MRI, and the radiographic examination revealed the following: All joints suffering from disc displacement with reduction. Patients were divide into two groups: - Group 1: consists of 10 patients who undergo the procedures of arthrocentesis and lavage using normal saline then followed by non-surgical treatment using modified mandibular splints - Group 2: consists of 10 patients who had received non-surgical treatment using modified mandibular splints only. Clinical results Seven different parameters were evaluated: pain intensity, disturbance in jaw function, maximal interincisal opening, lateral movement, protrusive movement, clicking and regional tenderness. Evaluation was done for the patient after 1 week, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks and 6 months. The both groups showed significant improvement in clinical symptoms at the end of the follow up period, but the treatment with arthrocentesis and lavage using normal saline then followed by non-surgical treatment using modified mandibular splints is superior than the treatment using modified mandibular splints only. |
