Abstract

aiming to assess the effect of magnesium sulphate in treatment of vasospastic cerebral ischemia in patients with traumatic brain injury. 60 ICU patients with Glasgow coma scale 8 or less due to primary brain injury were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups. Group 1 (Control group, n=30) and Group II (Study group) in which patients were treated received magnesium sulphate bolus 30 mg\kg slowly I.V after admission followed by infusion of 15 mg\kg\hr for 3 days. Patients of both groups were monitored for hemodynamic parameters, respiratory parameters, middle cerebral artery flow velocity, intracranial pressure and Glasgow coma scale with adding of monitoring of serum magnesium level in study group to guard against toxicity.
There was no statistically significant difference in age, sex and length but within each group there was a male predominance.
When assessing the hemodynamics of the studied patients in both groups, in group I (control group) and as compared to basal values, significant decrease in the mean values of heart rate occurred in this group after one hour and started to be highly statistically significant (p<0.001) after 36 hours. In the study group the mean values of heart rate occurred in this group were highly statistically significant lower than basal values (p<0.001) throughout the period of the study. Comparison of mean value of heart rate in the two groups were statistically significantly lower (p<0.05) in patients in group II as compared to patients in group I throughout the period of the study.
