Abstract

Milk of dairy cows may harbor a variety of microorganisms including Listeria monocytogenes, the first to be identified as an important food borne pathogen. This survey aimed to assess the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in raw milk.
A total of 560 various raw milk samples were collected from different dairy farms to examine the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. These isolates were further characterized by biochemical tests and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Listeria monocytogenes was isolated in 72 of the 560 samples (12.9%).Based on PCR, All the examined Listeria monocytogenes were positive for Listeriolysin O gene (hlyA) and p60 gene (iap).
These results indicate that there is a higher risk of contamination in the milking process in Egypt so more attention should be paid to maintaining good milking and strict hygiene practices, as consumption of raw milk could be a potential risk of human listeriosis.
