Abstract

The treatment of an infected un-united fracture is difficult, often requiring prolonged periods of hospitalization. In this series of cases, a minimum of not less than six months of treatment was required for all patients.
All the patients had open irrigation with antibiotics, drainage, and debridement prior to the treatment of the non-union, to render the infection quiescent and to remove the necrotic soft tissue and bone.
Bone consolidation was then obtained by employing the principle of achieving rigid stabilization of the non-union. Cancellous bone-grafting was carried out when indicated.
The willingness of the patient to undergo the extensive treatment and prolonged hospitalization, and the economic aspects of the therapy, must be carefully considered before undertaking such treatment.
Not every patient with infected nonunion of long bone is a candidate for
Reconstruction.
A philosophy of ‘infection-elimination first’ is a definite way of eradicating
Or controlling infection.
