Abstract

In Egypt, dogs and cats represent the majority of pet animal. Dogs also play an important role in house and farm guarding theses animals are frequently subjected to some surgical affectionsThe aim of this work is to recognize and record the most surgical affections of the mouth region in dogs and cats including affections of the teeth, mandible, jaw, tongue gum and lips. Also, to investigate and describe the methods, of diagnosis for such affections and thier treatments, either medically or surgically. The present study was carried-out on 1000 animals (500 dogs and 500 cats) which examined during the period extend from December 2010 to January, 2014. They were collected from Referral Military Veterinary Hospital – Almaza – Cairo, Small private clinics and private pet clinics. All cases were subjected to thoroughtly clinical examinations including inspectations, pulse rate palpation and body temperature with special examination including palpation of the affected organs beside case history This study included:-
1-The routine examination of dogs and cats, cleared that, the incidence of the mouth affections in dogs higher than that of the cats The incidence of teeth affections during regular examination of the dogs and cats differ among different breeds of dogs and cats. In dogs the most surgical affections were dental tartar, dental plaque, gum tartar, impacted teeth, broken teeth, mal occulusion, gingivitis and hole in the nasal sinus. While, the mandibular affections included sympheseal fracture, ramus fracture, maxillary fracture and mabdibular fracture. Also, the tongue affections especially needle in the tongue. The gum affections included gingivitis, gingival tear, gingival tumour and gum tumour. Also, the tumour in the soft tissue includes tumour at parotid region, thyroid gland tumour and parathyroid tumour- These affection differ from dog breeds to another, the higher surgical affections affecting mouth observed in Griffon, Pikenase dogs, while, the lower incidence observed in Pugs breeds, Pikinoi breeds and Dalmation. While, in cats the most surgical affections included canine losses and plaque. In addition the incidences of surgical affections of the mandible includes locked jaw, parapyseal fracture, sympheseal fracture, fracture of the jaw, ramus fracture, maxillary fracture, abscess and facial gangrene. While, the affections of the palate include cleft palate and throat obstruction. This affections differ according to the cat breeds as the higher incidence observed in Sherazi cats, followed by Balady cats and Siamy cats The results shows that dogs and cats that affected with severe surgical affection and required surgical treatment, cleared that, the incidence of this affections in dogs is higher than that of the cats as it reached to 20 % in dogs and 17.20 % in cats. In cats the results of incidences of different surgical affections among different age range, the higher surgical affections observed among age range of 1 – 2 years (65.12 %) followed by age range 3 – 4 years (27.90 %) and age range 5 – 6 years (6.98 %). In dogs affected with severe surgical affections and required surgical treatment either male or female the results cleared that, the incidence in male dogs were higher than female in male the percent reached to (67 %) and in female dogs reached to (33 %While, the incidence of different surgical affections in male and femal cats, the results cleared that, the incidence of surgical affections showed a higher incidences in female cats (65.11 %) than male cats (34.89 %-The Incidence of different surgical affections required among examined dogs cleared that, the most important affections of the teeth included, Dental tartar, Dental caris , Plaque, Incisor losses, teeth overcrowdness, abscess to teeth, hol in the teeth at premolar teeth, teeth losses, impacted teeth, and persistant milking teeth. - The present study indicated that, the dental tartar and stage of periodontal affection were seen in both dogs and cats which take soft diet more than dry food as processed biscuit, rawhide strips (rawmetat) , without periodical bRoushing of the teeth- The tongue affections included needle in the tongue (1 %- The mandibular affections in dogs that required surgical affections included sympheseal fracture, ramus fracture, maxillary fracture and mabdibular fracture. While, in cats, the icidence of surgical affections of the mandible includes locked jaw, paraphyseal fracture, sympheseal fracture, fracture of the jaw, ramus fracture, maxillary fracture, abscess and facial gangrene- Radiography is considered as a basic method for evaluation fracture healing for both the clinical and experimental studies- The recommended time for cerclage wire and plate removal in treatment of mandibular fracture was 12 weeks post-operatively while in case of acrylic external skeletal fixation the best time for removal was 6-9 weeks.
