Abstract

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effectiveness of PGF2α and GnRH injections at early lactation
on placental drop, uterine involution, resumption of postpartum
(pp) ovarian activity and subsequent reproductive performance
parameters in dairy cows, also it aims to investigate the
relationship between different blood metabolites and the
resumption of pp ovarian cyclicity in cows. The study was
conducted on 64 dairy cows in El-Salhya. Cows were randomly
assigned into the following groups: (i) control group which
were left without treatment. (ii) PGF2α treated group, where
cows received PGF2α immediately after calving. (iii) GnRH
treated group, each cow received GnRH analogue on 13-15 day
pp. (iv) PGF2α plus GnRH treated group. The reproductive tract
of the cows was examined twice weekly by rectal palpation and
transrectal ultrasound scanning. Blood samples were obtained
for progesterone and blood metabolites analysis. Administration
of PGF2α and GnRH during the early pp period slightly
improve the time required for placental drop, uterine involution
